The Character Pantheon
The Souls of the Siamese Epic
The epic of Khun Chang Khun Phaen is driven by a vibrant cast of characters whose passions, jealousies, and supernatural abilities mirror the complexities of human nature and ancient Thai society. At its core is a tragic love triangle, but the pantheon extends far beyond it, encompassing powerful spirits, rival sorcerers, and celestial beings.
Khun Phaen (Plai Kaew)
The quintessential hero and tragic figure of the epic. Born as Plai Kaew, Khun Phaen is a warrior of unmatched skill, a lover of devastating charm, and a master of ancient Wicha (Sorcery). His life is a relentless pursuit of martial glory, occult supremacy, and the elusive love of Nang Wanthong. He is the creator of the legendary three artifacts of power.
Nang Wanthong (Phim Philalai)
The tragic heroine, born Phim Philalai. Her breathtaking beauty becomes her curse, trapping her between two men: the handsome but capricious Khun Phaen, whom she truly loves, and the wealthy, devoted, but repulsive Khun Chang. Her indecision ultimately leads to her tragic demise, ordered by the King of Ayutthaya.
Khun Chang
The foil to Khun Phaen. Khun Chang is wealthy, influential, and completely devoted to Wanthong, but he is bald, ugly, and manipulative. Despite his physical shortcomings, he utilizes his wealth and political cunning to scheme against Khun Phaen, weaving a web of deceit that drives the tragedy forward.
Nang Bua Klee
One of Khun Phaen's wives, whose fate is inextricably linked to the darkest magics of the epic. Persuaded by her father to poison Khun Phaen, her betrayal leads to a terrifying preemptive strike. Khun Phaen extracts her unborn child to create the legendary Kuman Thong, cementing her role as a tragic sacrifice to the altar of Animist sorcery.
